Injuries are the leading cause of death for Albertans between the ages of 1 and 44.

During an average year in Alberta:

  • 1,664 Albertans die from an injury
  • 28,809 (*excluding adverse events) Albertans are hospitalized
  • 429,741 Albertans visit emergency departments.

This equates to a daily tally of:

  • 4 deaths
  • 79 hospital admissions
  • 1,177 Emergency Department visits.

While the greatest impact of an injury is human suffering, the financial cost is staggering. In 2004, injuries cost Alberta an extimated $2.94 BILLION annually - that's equal to $918 for every Albertan.
